History

Came House was designed in the mid 18th century by Francis Cartwright, a provincial architect, for John Damer [Bingham 1987], younger brother of Joseph Damer - who purchased Milton Abbey (see Milton Abbas local history pages) and who became Lord Milton and later the 1st Earl of Dorchester [Chaffey 2005]. A 'handsome, plain classical building' [Draper 1996: 188], it forms a rectangle faced in Portland stone and topped with balustrades. The north front, facing the parkland and the South Winterborne River is dated 1754 but the interior is though to have been completed in 1762 [Newman & Pevsner 1972]. A service block is connected to the east of the main building by a low passageway and a conservatory dates from around 1840.
